Cavities aren’t the only threat to your dental health. Gum disease is equally devastating. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 50% of adults in the US have a form of the infection. It’s caused by bacteria found in plaque and tartar buildup from poor oral hygiene habits. Without treatment, it can lead to several dental and health complications. Although gum disease is common, it’s easy to prevent. Here are 5 simple tips to keep your gums healthy.
Risks of Gum Disease
Initially, gum disease causes red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Gingivitis is the first stage of the infection. At this point, it’s easy to treat and won’t have lasting consequences for your oral or overall health. However, if the infection progresses, it can cause gum recession, loose teeth, and tooth loss.
The infection may also enter your bloodstream through the pressure of chewing. As bacteria circulate in your body, your risk of various health issues increases significantly. Advanced gum disease has been linked to heart disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetic complications, and respiratory illness. It can even cause preterm delivery and low birth rates.
Tips for Healthy Gums
Your smile doesn’t have to become another victim of gum disease. Here are 5 tips to keep your mouth healthy:
- Brush Twice Daily: Brush your teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss Every Day: Brushing alone can leave up to 40% of your teeth surfaces uncleaned because your toothbrush can’t reach everywhere. Daily flossing is the only way to remove plaque and food residue your toothbrush can’t reach.
- Use a Daily Mouthwash: Finish your oral hygiene routine with a daily mouthwash to kill any bacteria hiding in your mouth.
- Visit Your Dentist: Schedule a cleaning and checkup every 6 months with your dentist. They’ll keep your teeth and gums healthy to support the mouth and body connection.
- Stop Smoking: Smoking not only increases your risk of oral cancer, but it also weakens your immune system, making you more prone to infections, including gum disease.
Don’t Ignore the Signs of Gum Disease
If you develop any symptoms of gum disease, do not wait to schedule an appointment with your dentist. They’ll create the personalized plan you need to stop the infection in its tracks.
