Dental implants help millions of people around the world renew their oral health and confidence with a solution that can easily last a lifetime. Of course, while that sounds all well and good, one question immediately pops into people’s minds, “Will I have to take off work to get them?”
In most cases, yes, your dentist will ask you to take time off of work to recover from dental implant surgery. However, how much time can be quite different from person to person, and to get a better idea of what to expect, keep reading.
Will I Need to Take the Day of the Procedure Off?
Yes. While dental implant placement only takes a matter of hours, your dentist will almost certainly recommend you use the rest of the day to relax and recover.
This is because blood clots need to form over the surgery sites, as they will keep the newly exposed bone and soft tissues protected as you heal. You’ll need to change out gauze every few hours to control the bleeding, and too much movement can prevent the clot from coming together. All in all, you won’t be in a state to be productive no matter where you work!
Does Your Job Involve a Lot of Moving/Manual Labor?
If so, then you will likely need to take three to four days off. Just like above, a lot of movement and/or effort can make it harder for your mouth to heal immediately following implant surgery. The increase in blood flow stemming from physical activity can not only lead to more bleeding, but also possibly dislodge the all-important blood clots while they are still coming together.
Does Your Job Involve Mostly Sitting in One Place?
In this case, you only need to take about one to two days off following dental implant placement. Sitting, typing, and sending emails isn’t physically strenuous, meaning it’s OK to resume a desk job relatively quickly after implant surgery.
Planning Ahead
You won’t have to figure this out on your own when you decide to get dental implants. At your consultation with your implant dentist, they’ll cover all of the details about the procedure as well as the recovery process afterward. They’ll answer any questions you might have so that when you walk out of the office, you’ll know exactly what to expect and have plenty of time to plan accordingly.
Taking a few days off from work is a small ask when it comes to having your smile fully restored, and if you’re like most people, you probably deserve a little break anyway!
