A dental crown is a long-lasting solution to protect a tooth. They can last for many years before needing to be replaced; however, it’s not uncommon for a crown to lose its bond with a tooth over time. There are also many subtle signs that indicate it’s time for a replacement. Here’s how to know if you need a new dental crown.

Average Lifespan of Dental Crowns

The average life expectancy of a dental crown is 5 to 15 years, but they can last much longer. Many factors influence the lifespan of a restoration, like the materials used and the location of the crown. Molars experience more wear and tear naturally than incisors and canines. Therefore, crowns used for back teeth may have a slightly shorter life expectancy than those used in the front of the mouth. Your oral hygiene habits and dental care can also affect how long your restoration lasts.

Signs of Dental Crown Failure

Symptoms of dental crown failure can occur gradually and take many forms, including:

  • Dark Line Near Gums: If you notice a dark line near your gums, it’s a shadow from your restoration. It’s caused by the gum line receding, leaving your tooth exposed to sensitivity, bacteria, and infections.
  • Pain or Swelling: Pain or swelling is a clear sign that there’s an issue with your restoration. It can indicate there’s new decay underneath your crown that must be treated before it turns into an infection.
  • Visible Damage: Your crown will experience wear and tear over time. You’ll need a replacement if your crown is damaged.

Caring for Dental Crowns

Your dentist can quickly swap out your old crown with a new one that looks natural. Your restoration can last for several years with the right care, which includes:

  • Good Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss every night. Pay careful attention when cleaning the area where your crown meets your gum line.
  • Watch What You Eat: Your restoration will be durable, but it’s best to moderate your consumption of hard, chewy, and sticky foods to get the most from your crown.
  • Stop Bad Oral Habits: Ask your dentist for a nightguard if you grind or clench your teeth. Break any bad habits that can damage your crown, like crunching ice or chewing on your fingernails.
  • Visit Your Dentist: Commit to visiting your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. They’ll keep your mouth healthy and your crown functioning its best.

You can benefit from long-lasting results by keeping your teeth and gums healthy.
